Practical Theoretical Weight Calculation Formulas for 16 Common Steel Products

If you are engaged in construction, steel structure processing, metal trade, or industrial logistics, quickly and accurately estimating the weight of steel materials is a core efficiency-boosting skill. On-site weighing of large batches of steel is often time-consuming and labor-intensive, while theoretical weight calculation based on standard dimensional parameters can get reliable reference results in seconds, which is very suitable for scenarios such as cost budgeting, quotation making, transportation stowage planning, and inventory checking.

Below we have compiled the most widely recognized industry-standard calculation formulas for 16 types of steel products, with clear unit labels for easy reference. All calculation results are in kilograms (kg).

1. Seamless Steel Pipe

Formula: [(Outer Diameter (mm) - Wall Thickness (mm)) × Wall Thickness (mm) × 0.02466 + 10% allowance] × Length (m) Note: The 10% allowance is a common industry additional coefficient, you can adjust it according to actual process requirements

2. Galvanized Round Steel Pipe

Formula: (Outer Diameter (mm) - Wall Thickness (mm)) × Wall Thickness (mm) × 0.02466 × 1.04 (zinc coating coefficient) × Length (m)

3. Galvanized Square Steel Pipe

Formula: (Perimeter (mm) ÷ 3.14 - Wall Thickness (mm)) × Wall Thickness (mm) × 0.02466 × 1.04 (zinc coating coefficient) × Length (m)

4. Welded Round Steel Pipe

Formula: (Outer Diameter (mm) - Wall Thickness (mm)) × Wall Thickness (mm) × 0.02466 × Length (m)

5. Welded Square Steel Pipe

Formula: (Perimeter (mm) ÷ 3.14 - Wall Thickness (mm)) × Wall Thickness (mm) × 0.02466 × Length (m)

6. Spiral Steel Pipe

Formula: (Outer Diameter (mm) - Wall Thickness (mm)) × Wall Thickness (mm) × 0.02466 × Length (m) + Length (m) × 0.5 kg

7. Equal Angle Steel

Formula: Side Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × 0.015 × Length (m)

8. Unequal Angle Steel

Formula: (Side Width 1 (mm) + Side Width 2 (mm)) × Thickness (mm) × 0.0076 × Length (m)

9. Steel Plate

Formula: 7.85 × Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm)

10. Round Steel Bar

Formula: Diameter (mm) × Diameter (mm) × 0.00617 × Length (m)

11. Square Steel Bar

Formula: Side Width (mm) × Side Width (mm) × Length (m) × 0.00785

12. Flat Steel Bar

Formula: Side Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Length (m) × 0.00785

13. Hexagonal Steel Bar

Formula: Opposite Side Distance (mm) × Opposite Side Distance (mm) × Length (m) × 0.0068

14. Deformed Steel Bar (Rebar)

Formula: Diameter (mm) × Diameter (mm) × 0.00617 × Length (m)

15. Checkered Steel Plate

Formula: (7.85 × Thickness (mm) + 3 kg) × Length (m) × Width (m)

16. Steel Wire Rod

Formula: Diameter (mm) × Diameter (mm) × 0.006165 × Length (m)

Coefficients such as the zinc layer coefficient 1.04 and seamless pipe 10% allowance are general industry standards, which can be adjusted according to actual project requirements or local specification provisions.

There is a small deviation between the theoretical calculation weight and the actual weight, which meets the usage requirements of most scenarios such as quotation and budget. For scenarios with extremely high precision requirements, it is recommended to use actual weighing results.
