Reference News Network has reported that the British media claimed China is planning to launch a new rectification action against steel production in Tangshan, a North China city, to prevent the local government from failing to comply with the liquidation order on March 29.
The Financial Times website published a report,which entitled "China's rectification of the closure of steel mills,"on March 28. The report claimed the central government has issued a notice to officials in Hebei Province, said an investigation team has been sent to the steel city of Tangshan to check the steel Factory closures.
Last year, the Chinese State Council set a plan to phase out 100 million to 150 million tons of steel production in order to adjust the economic structure, from government-led infrastructure investment and export-driven models, to a consumption and service-oriented models in greater degree.
The move is also aimed at easing China's severe haze and groundwater pollution according to the report. Steel is the second largest contributor to emissions of sulfur dioxide and other substances, second only to coal-fired power generation.
"Local governments always want to protect local industries," said Rakuta,who is the founder of a steel industry research firm,which named LTH Consulting.
Environmental protection activities organized by Greenpeace commissioned a study released last month showed that China reported that steel production capacity reduction of two-thirds from the already idle steel mills in last year. According to the preliminary data from China's National Bureau of Statistics, crude steel production increased by about 1% over the previous year, to 808 million tons in 2016.
Beijing has taken action to tighten control over steel mills and verify the closure and dismantling of production sites. In November last year, the inspection team was sent to some steelmaking province, through the closure of obsolete steel mills to implement pollution control standards.
The report said that Tangshan is the heart of China's steel production. The city is the seat of state-owned Tangshan Iron and Steel Group headquarters, the group merged to other company form the world's second largest steel production enterprises - Hebei Iron and Steel Group in 2006.
