On the afternoon of the 24th local time, a container ship (MSC ELSA 3) owned by MSC tilted 38 nautical miles off the coast of Cochin in southwestern India, causing many containers to fall into the sea and eventually sink in the early morning of the 25th.
The Indian Ministry of Defense issued a statement saying: The freighter flew the Liberian flag, the captain was from Russia, and 20 crew members were from the Philippines, 2 from Ukraine, and 1 crew member from Georgia, all of whom have been safely rescued. When the ship sank, there were 640 containers on board, of which 13 were loaded with dangerous goods and 12 were loaded with calcium carbide, but it was not specified what kind of dangerous goods were in the containers.
